Samuel Dashiell Hammett, first master of the "hard-boiled" detective novel, created such memorable characters as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon (1930), Nick and Nora Charles in The Thin Man(1934), and the Continental Op in Red Harvest (1929) and The Dain Curse (1929).
