Elizabeth George began her career as a high school English teacher in California. She left education after thirteen and a half years when she sold her first novel, A Great Deliverance, which she wrote in three and a half weeks, and in which she introduced her characters Thomas Lynley, a Scotland Yard detective, and sergeant Barbara Havers.
Though born in Ohio, and educated in California, George has made herself part of the English detective tradition -- more leisurely and more given to psychological probing than its terse American counterpart. Most of her novels have been filmed for television by the BBC and have been broadcast in the US on PBS's MYSTERY.
