Author of 20 detective stories and doyenne of British crime fiction, P.D. (Phyllis Dorothy) James weaves her meticulously-plotted novels around Commander Adam Dalgliesh, policeman and poet. Her sprawling plots, each loose end meticulously tied off, have been regularly adapted for British television (and "Mystery!" on PBS in the USA) with mixed success. She lists Graham Greene among her influences, and The Third Man as her favorite movie.
