ASSIGNMENT:
Financial services provider TradingNews Inc. developed a prototype in 1999 for its "streaming headline" service to bring technical analysis to active investors. Testing and demonstrations quickly revealed two key challenges: the java prototype faced firewall problems with corporate users -- a key customer segment -- and the "daytrader" intensity of the product was limiting its appeal in the marketplace.

APPROACH:
The service was rebuilt and relaunched (as "M4Logic.com") on a firewall-friendly web/wireless platform, with features to enable co-branding and customization for partners. A family of web pages was designed to complement the real-time streaming features, to enable investors to personalize the product, and to stockpile information for use by a broader range of investors.

Each of 8,200 actively traded stocks on the NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ exchanges was given its own summary page to place the real-time information in a larger context. In addition, a daily TrendMap was calculated for each stock (see sample at left) to show important trend information in a quick, abbreviated form.

The new site's home page was outfitted with a "highlights" chart to automatically list the most technically active stocks during the trading day, and end-of-day summary reports were introduced for the site and for syndication.
